The Collection Problem

Step one. Data actually entering your tools in the first place.

A lot of the analytics conversation lately has been about the advanced end of the stack. Server-side infrastructure, privacy regulations, consent management platforms. All of it matters. But it's optimization on top of a foundation, and if the foundation is shaky, the optimization doesn't do what you think it's doing.

When I say Collection, I mean the actual mechanism of data moving from your website into your tools. GA4 logging events. Ad platforms receiving conversion signals. Email click-tracking firing correctly. Dashboards populating with the right numbers. That's Collection. Not complicated to define. Just easy to take for granted.

Here's where it gets interesting. Universal Analytics was shut off on July 1, 2023. Almost three years ago. When that happened, most teams migrated to GA4, or believed they had, and kept moving. The assumption was that GA4 would function the same way UA did. It doesn't. Different data model, different event structure, different default configurations. The handoff was messy, and a lot of setups that "looked fine" were never actually verified.

So there are businesses out there running on three years of GA4 data that's never been checked. Nothing obviously broke. The dashboards kept running. Reports kept generating. But the Collection layer, the part where data actually enters the system, was never confirmed.

That 80% number makes more sense when you look at it through that lens.

The advanced stuff only helps when Collection is solid. If data isn't entering your tools correctly, everything downstream, your reports, your optimization decisions, your audience targeting, is built on something unreliable. Better consent management on a broken collection setup is still a broken setup.

Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is go back to the beginning.
