I had a call last week where I pulled up someone's GA4 and their direct traffic was sitting at 47%.
They were proud of it. "People really know our brand."
I didn't have the heart to tell them right away. But no. That's not what that number means.
Direct traffic in GA4 is where every visit goes when Google can't figure out where it came from. Untagged emails, PDF clicks, Slack links, SMS campaigns. All of it labeled "Direct" and swept under the rug.
I've been staring at this same problem since 2005, and I finally made the video I've wanted to make about it for years.
Here's what still gets me after 20 years of looking at analytics accounts.
